How to help a User apply for provisional protection.

This service is intended for individuals or companies with plant varieties. To utilize this service, the applicant must have authorization from the breeder, as they hold the intellectual property rights to the variety and are entitled to compensation. 


The service applies to various crop types, depending on the breeder or discoverer. Only those with the breeder's authorization are eligible to apply.


The service is provided by the Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA)


The processing time is 60 days, and the price depends on the case


 Prerequisites: 

  • Registered businesses, they should have a Company TIN

  • Applicants should have a valid phone number, email address, or both. 

Required attachments

  • Photos of the plant variety to be protected

  • Certificate from RDB

  • Certificate from RCA

  • DUS Report


Conditional attachments

  • Authorization or Letter of attorney from the breeder to register this variety.

Optional attachments

  • Other supporting document

Note:

  • Upon approval of this service from the plant variety officer, the applicant should apply for the certificate via Irembo (Issuance of certificate of Provisional License)
